Let’s talk about something that has quietly, but profoundly, changed the rhythm of my spiritual life: prayer journaling.


Now, I know that in the age of Bible apps and 5-minute devotionals, this might sound like one more thing to add to your spiritual to-do list. But I want you to hear me as your career big sis and neuroscience-loving life coach when I say: prayer journaling isn’t just a spiritual routine—it’s a neurospiritual reset, a faith habit that rewires how you process life, pain, purpose, and praise.


What Is Prayer Journaling (and Why It’s Not Just Another Devotional)?


Unlike your weekday devotional where you're studying scripture, drawing insights, and applying them to your day, prayer journaling is not about studying—it's about communing. It’s your raw, unfiltered space to talk to God. Not perform. Not preach. Just pour.

And that’s what makes it transformational.

When I sit down with my prayer journal on Sundays, it’s the most honest version of me that shows up. The tired me. The hopeful me. The confused, the worshipful, the grieving, the grateful—all of it. And what makes that moment sacred is that I’m not editing any part of myself to “sound spiritual.” I’m just speaking to God and writing like He’s sitting across from me. Because He is.


The Neuroscience of Prayer Journaling


Let me put my neuroscientist hat on for a moment.

When you engage in reflective writing—especially in the context of faith—you’re doing something called “affect labeling.” You’re naming the emotions and experiences that feel abstract or overwhelming, and in doing so, you reduce their intensity in the brain. It’s not just therapeutic; it’s a spiritual detox.

You’re also activating regions of the brain responsible for introspection, decision-making, and emotional regulation. That’s why, over time, you start noticing that you’re becoming wiser, calmer, and more intentional. Your choices align with your spirit. Your emotions feel more grounded. Your faith deepens—not just in theory, but in lived experience.


Specificity Matters: What Are You Really Asking God For?


One of the biggest spiritual shifts I experienced was realizing this: I wasn’t asking God for anything. I was vague. Passive. Almost scared to be specific—like I didn’t want to burden God with my needs.

But James 1:5 reminds us: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."

Prayer journaling taught me to ask. To ask for wisdom. For clarity. For guidance. To ask Him to teach me—not just to fix things. To ask Him to grow me—not just to save me.

That’s a spiritual maturity shift that only comes when you’ve sat long enough with your thoughts, sifted through your desires, and written them down plainly. The kind of clarity that changes lives.


Learning to Listen to God in Stillness


Prayer isn’t a monologue. It’s a conversation. And one of the most neglected parts of that conversation is the listening.

After I pour out my thoughts, requests, and emotions, I sit with scripture. I use a prayer journal that prompts me to meditate on a Bible verse and reflect. It’s in those quiet pages that I hear the whispers of God. Not always audibly—but in the language of ideas, nudges, comfort, and conviction.

I like to journal on Sundays because by then, I’ve been to church, listened to worship music, and fed my spirit. My heart is open. My walls are down. And it’s in that posture that I can finally hear—not the voice of fear or shame or the world—but the still small voice of God reminding me of who I am and whose I am.


Learning to Discern the Voice of God


And let's be real for a second—not every voice you hear in your head is the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it’s your own voice. Sometimes it’s trauma. Sometimes it’s the memory of what someone said to you years ago. And sometimes, it’s the voice of your fears pretending to be divine instruction.

That’s why I love reflective writing. It creates a safe space for you to sort through the noise. To lay it all down and say, God, help me see what’s true. And He will. Over time, you start recognizing His tone. His patterns. His gentle push. You become more confident in your spiritual discernment—not because you're trying harder, but because you’re listening deeper.


My Testimony


There were times when I was deep in depression. When the seizures and health challenges scared me. When rejection letters kept piling up. When my body felt like it was failing me and my dreams felt out of reach.

In those seasons, it wasn’t the sermons or the podcasts that sustained me. It was prayer journaling. That quiet, consistent discipline gave me something I desperately needed: perspective. And hope. And healing.

I’ve seen prayers answered—months, sometimes years after I wrote them down. I’ve seen miracles I didn’t even know I had prayed for, because they were buried deep in journal pages only God could see.


How to Start Your Prayer Journaling Habit


Let me leave you with some practical steps to help you build your own habit:

  1. Pick a day to journal regularly. I recommend Sundays. Your spirit’s already been primed from worship, and your heart is softer. Start there.

  2. Set the mood. Light a candle. Play soft worship in the background. Give your senses the signal that you’re entering sacred space.

  3. Use a guided prayer journal. Don’t just freestyle every time. Use a journal that prompts you to reflect on scripture, ask specific questions, and write your prayers.

  4. Don’t rush. This is not a task to complete. It’s a conversation to enjoy.

  5. Revisit your entries. Every few months, go back and read old entries. Watch how your prayers—and your heart—have evolved.

  6. Pray with faith, not performance. Be real. Be raw. Be reverent. God’s not impressed by polished prayers—He’s moved by honest ones.
