It's World Mental Health Day, and there is no better day to talk about feelings of isolation when dealing with mental challenges. When life becomes overwhelming—whether due to grief, stress, or mental health struggles—being part of a supportive community can make all the difference. As a psychologist and neuroscientist, I’ve spent years studying how our minds and hearts respond to hardship. And as someone who finds strength in faith, I know that true healing often requires a community that walks alongside us and we can lean on. In addition to my expertise and knowledge on the topic of mental health, I have experienced the challenging battles of mental illness, and I have so much to be grateful for when it comes to my healing journey especially combating feelings of isolation.
Why Community Matters
Science and scripture agree on one thing: we’re not meant to go through life alone. Research shows that our brains are wired for connection. Being part of a community not only helps us cope but actually boosts our mental health. For example, when we spend time with supportive people, our brains release oxytocin, a hormone that helps reduce stress. This connection acts as a natural buffer, making us more resilient to life’s challenges.
In the Bible, we see time and again how God encourages us to support one another. Galatians 6:2 says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” This is a powerful reminder that we are meant to help each other through life’s heavy seasons. Healing is not just an individual journey but a shared one.
Mental Health in a Faith-Based System
It’s common to think of mental health as purely a medical issue, and while that’s partly true, mental health is also deeply connected to our spiritual well-being. As Christians, we believe that God cares about every part of us—our bodies, minds, and souls. Mental health struggles aren’t signs of weakness or lack of faith; they’re part of being human.
In times of mental distress, turning to God and a supportive faith-based community can be a powerful source of strength. A healthy, faith-based approach to mental health combines prayer and scripture with practical tools like therapy, community support, and personal reflection. Rather than pushing our struggles aside or feeling shame, we can embrace our faith as a foundation for our healing journey.
Healing as a Journey, Not a Destination
It’s important to understand that healing is not an overnight process. It’s a journey with highs and lows, steps forward and steps back. And that’s okay. Just as physical wounds take time to heal, emotional and spiritual wounds do as well. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” God walks with us through every step, offering comfort and guidance.
Being part of a supportive community can help us stay grounded during this journey. When we connect with others who understand or empathize with our struggles, we are reminded that we’re not alone. We see that others, too, have faced difficult times and found hope and healing on the other side. This encourages us to keep going, to trust that God has a plan, and to allow ourselves the grace to heal at our own pace.
Finding Community in “Mentali-tea”
As a way to give back and answer my calling in bringing science-backed resources of wellbeing to people of faith, I am creating. community called "Mentali-tea". One way we can build these meaningful connections is through intentional groups, like “Mentali-tea,” a faith-based community where Christian women gather to support each other through life’s challenges. By coming together in a safe, understanding environment, we create a space for healing that combines spiritual encouragement with practical mental health support. The art of having soulful conversations over tea, gardening, painting and journaling is at the heart of this community.
As members of a faith community, we have the opportunity to lift each other up. We can listen without judgment, pray for each other, and share in the wisdom of our journeys. We can remind each other of God’s love and the importance of self-compassion.
In a world that often feels overwhelming, let’s choose to walk this journey together. Through community, faith, and time, we can find the peace and resilience we seek.
